POLYESTER/COTTON THREAD

Polyester Cotton Thread, also known as Polycotton Thread, is a type of sewing thread that has a polyester core which is wrapped in a cotton covering. Polyester is a strong and flexible material. Thus, making a core from such material gives the thread flexibility and strength. Another great quality of polyester is that it is also resistant to abrasion, therefore ensuring that it is able to withstand wear and tear due to friction when sewn to the garment or fabric.

Polycotton Thread has a cotton wrap which provides it with heat dissipation characteristics. When sewn, the needle’s temperature rises causing a decrease to the strength of the thread. With heat resistance from cotton wrap, the polycotton thread is able to maintain its strength during sewing process.  In addition, polycotton sewing threads also have high tenacity, which means they are able to grip the fabric firmly in place even after being washed and worn. When the sewn fabric becomes wet, the cotton wrap absorbs the moisture and swells. This will fill the needle holes and prevent seam leakage.

Polycotton thread’s appearance fades along with the garment or fabric, making it look and feel natural all the time. Polycotton also doesn’t shrink when washed, thereby ensuring that the garment will hold its shape for a long time. These sewing threads also do not produce a lot of lint, which helps in keeping the machine clean.

Polyester Cotton Thread also has an authentic look and feel. With all its characteristics, this thread is popularly used in extreme sewing applications on heavy fabrics. They’re even used on multiple layers sewing. But probably the most popular use of this thread is in the automotive and denim industry. These threads are also ideal for sewing mattresses, canvas goods, and tarpaulins. It’s also used in upholstery, boat covers, and leather goods. Like most threads, polycotton sewing threads come in various sizes, colours, and length.

This thread is and has been one of the widest used sewing threads for many years due to
its major features. The base is a filament polyester giving it strength, abrasion resistance and UV resistance.
The Polyester is wrapped with natural cotton which then gives the thread the following:
1. Strength, anti-abrasion, UV resistance.
2. Cotton covering helps cool needle temperature.
3. Cotton helps fill needle holes and will absorb moisture, therefore, assisting in proofing sewn
fabric against excess water penetration.
4. Widely liked by “Saddlers” and general leather sewers, horse rug and saddlecloth makers.
5. We stock a wide range of sizes and colours for the industrial field:

M8 (Tex 350) X 1.000 mtrs/spool durable for its size when you use it for sewing
M12 (Tex 240) X 2,500 mtrs/spool - widely used by saddlers & horse rug makers
M20 (Tex 135) X 2,000 mtrs/spool - used through the upholstery industry
M25 (Tex 120) X 2,500 mtrs/spool - liked by horse rug makers
M36 (Tex 80) X 4,000 mtrs/spool - one of the widest used poly/cotton sizes due to
strength and sewability
M36 (Tex 80) X 1,000 mtrs/spool - these smaller 1,000 mtrs/spool are stocked for following reasons:

  • We hold 17 colours to allow the user to, say, carry larger spools – i.e. black/white. These may be continually used but they may not need large spools all the time.
  • The smaller spools gives a wide available colour range with the cost of the larger 4,000 mtrs/spool.
