FABRIC

Sewing requires the right fabric in order to get the desired results. In some cases, choosing the right fabric can become difficult since it comes in a broad range of textures, colours, composition, etc. This is why it is important to know more about this material.

WHAT IS FABRIC?

Fabric is an essential material that is made up of threads, fibres, or yarns that are weaved or knitted in different ways. This material is flexible and comes in a wide range of textures, colours, composition, and patterns. Fabric is a material that is widely used in different industries from fashion, home décor, and homeware to aeronautics and automotive industries.

FABRIC: NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC FIBRES

Fabric is usually made from either natural or synthetic fibres. Natural fibres commonly include cotton, linen, silk, and wool; while synthetic fibres include acrylic, microfibre, nylon, and polyester. Each type of fabric boasts its own features or advantages, whether it is with appearance, fitting, or feel. These advantages or features should be considered when choosing the fabric to match the sewing pattern.

TYPES OF FABRIC

Fabric selection can get a bit problematic, so to start with, it is important to consider the two main types, which are knitted and woven.

Knitted fabrics were created using a process where one or more yarn is interlocked in a series of loops. This type of fabric is suitable if you are creating tshirts, dressings, leggings, underwear, or other clothing projects. Knitting has four basic types which includes single knit, double knit, specialized weft knit, and warp knit. Depending on the type of material used and the knitting pattern, each knitted fabric will have a different level of stretchiness.

Woven fabrics are commonly made by interlacing two sets of yarn or threads in a pattern. Known as weft and warp threads, the fabric becomes durable and strong when these are passed through each other at the correct angles. This type of fabric is commonly weaved in three basic types, namely, plain weave, satin weave, and twill weave. Because of its features, this fabric is widely used for clothing and upholstery projects. Apart from having different textures, this is widely varies in weight.
